Our Organization

~ Who We Are ~

Zambia Wildlife and Community Foundation (ZWCF) is a non-profit organization committed to collaboratively contributing to the conservation and community development of rural communities living close to core conservation areas in Zambia. Serving as an intermediary between U.S. donors and conservation and community uplift organizations on the ground in Zambia, our principle purpose is to drive foreign investment into one of the most profound wildlife habitats in Africa. As an established 501(c)(3), we are able to accept donations from U.S. donors and grant funds directly to our partners' projects in Zambia. This allows our partners to focus on what's most important - creating a lasting difference.

ZWCF ensures that our funds are being utilized in the most effective way possible. We have a board presence within each of our local sponsors/partners organizations. Our decision-making processes prioritizes maximum transparency both to our partners and our donors. ZWCF's board involvement allows us to accurately monitor expenditures, ensuring alignment with our mission, and provide guidance on effective fund utilization.

ZWCF is uniquely positioned to develop pragmatic, lasting conservation solutions for Zambia.

Our vision implores us to make good and hard choices about the models that are most likely to achieve a desirable future for Zambia’s people and wildlife. It is especially important that ZWCF and our collaborators invest at the interface of Zambia where wildlife and wild lands intersect with human activities and settlements.

ZWCF is uniquely positioned in the conservation landscape on the continent, encompassing the combination of:

  • Taking a local approach that serves the conservation and development goals of individual Zambian communities.

  • Providing and elevating local community voices for wildlife and wild lands

  • Offering a global presence and perspective.

Where We Work

Zambia, a vibrant country in the heart of southern Africa, is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage but faces significant socio-economic challenges. This landlocked nation is home to a diverse array of wildlife and stunning landscapes, including 18 national parks and numerous wildlife reserves. These protected areas are critical habitats for a variety of species and are central to Zambia's conservation efforts.

Despite its natural wealth, Zambia grapples with high levels of poverty, particularly in rural areas where many communities depend on subsistence farming and an increasing reliance on bushmeat. The population is young and rapidly growing, with a substantial proportion under the age of 15. These demographics present unique challenges and opportunities in terms of community development and sustainable conservation.

The country’s struggle with high inequality, a burgeoning birth rate, and the impacts of HIV/AIDS highlights the urgent need for integrated conservation programs that address both wildlife protection and community welfare.  With a GDP per capita of $4,070, Zambia is one of the poorest countries in Africa based on 2023 GDP per capita.
